There are various large dragons that haunt ponds in Vietnam, but in Northern Vietnam two species are widely spread and abundant, occurring even on ponds and lakes in Hanoi City, a place not known for its pure and clear waters. These are Ictinogomphus pertinax and Sinictinogomphus clavatus. Clavatus is readily distinguished from pertinax by the yellow centers to the flanges and the yellow femora, amongst others. One could say these are boring species, but they cannot help being common and in fact they are rather spectacular.
